2001 Exhibition Royal Festival Hall, London SE1
In
1997 we were appointed by the Royal Festival Hall to design an exhibition
of submitted schemes for the public spaces of the South Bank, a competition
that was awarded to Richard Rogers Architects. Having submitted a scheme
for the original competition and failed to secure the commission, this was
an education in patience and understanding.
We were keen to echo the egalitarian modernist quality of the Festival Hall foyer, where the exhibition would take place and we arrived at a scheme, which clearly delineated each scheme, without introducing hierarchy of prevailing and unsuccessful schemes. Our design simplified the contours of the most recognisable buildings on the South Bank and turned them in to stands upon which to display the exhibits. These were arranged in the same geographical relationship as the existing buildings, thereby conveying to the public a sense of the actual site. Furthermore the drawings and models of the featured schemes were simplified in order to make them more comprehensible to members of the general public. The winning scheme was placed in the window so that it could be viewed against the backdrop of the existing South Bank.
