Molenplein
Den Helder, The Netherlands
2010
Molenplein is a housing project located in the Dutch town of
Den Helder. The site occupies a strip of land between the Helderskanaal
to the west and Werf kanaal and historic naval barracks to the east.
The Master Plan by West 8 required three-storey houses to the east and
two-storey houses to the west, continuing the basic building pattern of
the strip to the south. Tony Fretton Architects and Dutch architects
Geurst en Schulze Architecten, have each designed a number of different
house types along the strip, perpetuating the varied building facades
south of the site. The houses are distributed in a way that satisfies
the West 8 masterplan and its requirement for diversity. Facades
are all in brick and white painted brick and designed with large windows
like classic Dutch canal houses.
Our house types provide flexibility in the plan arrangement. All houses
are offered as ‘casco’s’ or “shells” with
fixed service risers, carefully positioned fenestration and staircases
provide a wide range of possible internal room configurations.
