Phillimore Gardens
Chelsea, London, UK
2008
The extensive refurbishment of this existing 5 storey town house includes
the construction of a new basement with a 20m long swimming pool. The
design maxmises the connection to the garden and the views beyond to Holland
Park. This is reflected in the organisation of the staircases and vertical
connections and also in the design of the rear facade which will bring
the possibilities of views and abundant daylight.
All rooms on the lower floors, starting with the Ground floor entrance
hall, are considered as a set of spacious public rooms, linked together
by a graceful cascading staircase. This delivers the visitor to the family
room and kitchen directly at the level of the garden and then continues
onto the basement level which will be dedicated to activity and relaxation
in and around the swimming pool. The stair sequence rises again via an
external courtyard back to the garden level.
Balanced with this quality in the lower floors, the more private upper
floors, also accessed from the Ground floor entrance hall but via a more
discrete partially hidden stair, consist of two floors of bedroom suites,
a voluminous studio space on the top floor and an external roof terrace
hidden in the apex of the traditional roof shape.
