Vassall Road Housing and Healthcare
Centre
Brixton, London
The key purpose of the project is to provide a Doctors surgery for the
community, with a clear identity and entrance from Vassall Road. The development
also provides two 2-bedroom flats and seven 2-bedroom maisonettes in the
floors above the surgery. Servite Housing Association and developer Baylight
Properties are committed to a carefully crafted building that will be
an exemplar for the whole estate.
The building that we have designed is similar in height to the adjacent
estate. Scale and form of windows derives from the Villas and terraced
houses in the area. Facades are in brick and lightly over-painted with
Keim mineral paint to simulate the aged quality of the brickwork in the
surrounding Villas.
A major consideration has been to minimise the sense of enclosure by the
existing flats in Healy House and to provide far better outlook for them
than in the previously consented scheme. To this end, the rear elevation
will be stepped back at first floor level, and the area of ground between
the scheme and Healy House will be laid out as a wide planted pavement.
